Local Food Haul: December

Local Food Haul: December in Ohio - eating locally in the winter

December in Ohio...here's what I'm able to source locally.

Milk, eggs, and cheese. I participate in a herdshare program at a farm two towns over. That's too far to be convenient to swing by, but every two weeks they have pickups at several nearby locations. I pick up my standard order of eggs and milk, and they also gift me with a nice piece of cheese for the holidays. They make their own and while I'm not sure of the exact type this is it is sharp like cheddar. They also have cream, butter, and meat they've raised available but those are special occasion purchases for me and not something I need this week.

Meyer lemons! I have some errands to run in the city so I swing into a greenhouse that has a 30 year old Meyer lemon tree growing in it so I can stock up on one of Ohio's only sources of citrus fruit.

Gold Rush Apples. These are the latest ripening apple at my local orchard and they are worth the wait. While they have been off the tree for a couple of months now they are an excellent storage keeping apple, and I get enough to stock my fridge and breezeway through the spring.

Eating Locally through Ohio's winters

I should add that these are just the things I purchased today. At local fruit farms and greenhouses I can also buy a host of winter squash, apple cider, popcorn, maple syrup, honey, sorghum, vinegar, kombucha, sauerkraut, kale, potatoes, and sweet potatoes along with meat, cream, and butter.

Not bad for a land that is frozen and covered in snow.
